a rant about our current situation
I want to yell and scream and kick my feet about like a child. There has been so much in the news lately about how doomed our planet and civilisation is and it is so frustrating. I'm by no means a climate optimist, but this is honestly depressing. I live a relatively privileged life and in many ways am not affected first hand by many of the effects of climate change yet I'm still sitting here crying.
It's so hard to keep telling yourself that your efforts are worth it when you read about how close we are to crossing the path of no return, to comprehend the gravity of our environmental situation, to not feel angry and upset at people who don't see the world as you do; who don't see this planet as something sacred that we must respect and cherish.
I am not an angry person, but when every news outlet in the world is throwing "we are doomed and there is nothing we can do about it" in my face it makes it difficult to feel positive, to not feel mad at every government, political figure, company, and person on this earth who isn't listening to our mother's desperate calls for help.
We rely on this earth for life, this is no longer about the minute group of people who are passionate about the environment, this is about the future of humanity, of our planet, and of every other species that lives here. As a society we need to acknowledge and accept our current situation so we can move on and actually instigate change.
This is one of those situations in which zero waste is about the bigger picture. Zero waste is a form of activism and it is up to us, as people who choose to live with the planet in mind, to get involved in activism beyond social media, beyond how much trash you produce. Get involved in local community groups, get involved in pushing for policy change, use this "we are doomed" anger, guilt, or whatever else it sparks in you as motivation to truly push for change. It's great to start by refusing single-use plastics, but don't stop there.
